Aww Mondays
I Need Somebody to Love Me
Monday’s Music Moves Me
The high school seniors have just graduated this week-end and the rest of the students are headed into their final week of school. That means that summer is about to kick into high gear with families planning vacations, kids going to some kind of camp, and everyone trying their best to unwind from their normal routines and enjoy something special. We have already taken a road trip into Texas Hill Country to see the Bluebonnets and visit some great small Texas towns. Later this summer there will be a gathering of some of the cousins at the lake for a few days. The theme for this week is “Your Choice” so I think I will choose summer. The first song is from the Broadway musical Porgy & Bess. The song just drips with the long, hot, dog days of summer. I don’t believe it was done any better than by these two jazz/blues greats Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.
Eddie Cochran was a first generation rock ‘n roller of the fifties and early sixties. His biggest hit was Summertime Blues.
Along came the sixties, long hair, outrageous costumes and heavily amplified music. The Who took Summertime Blues to a whole new level.
One group originated in 1969 and stayed popular through the 70’s as Sha Na Na. They were part doo-wop throwback, part tribute, and part boy band parody. Sha Na Na, may not have been the best group of their era, but they were fun and entertaining.
Of course the ultimate graduation anthem of seniors everywhere is none other that Alice Cooper and School Is Out Forever!!!
Have a blessed week.
Lots of summertime blues, but that’s OK. I enjoyed the classic live Who (complete with guitar bashing at the end) and, of course, Eddie Cochran. School isn’t out where I live in upstate New York yet – it will be another three or so weeks (we are behind other parts of the country in that respect). But today we are finally getting summer like weather (it’s almost 80 degrees and only 10:15am) – at least for one day. Did I mention your dog photo outcuted all your other photos so far? Have a great summer, DrillerAA.

Since we didn’t have any snow days this year school will be out before Memorial Day…just like the good ol’ days.

Love Sha Na Na! Do you remember their syndicated show back in the early ’80’s? WMAQ in Chicago had a whole block on Saturday night after SNL. They had SCTV, Sha Na Na, The Hudson Brothers, and Tales of the Unexpected. I didn’t get to bed before 2 AM…
My favorite version of “Summertime Blues” was the psychedelic one by Blue Cheer. Remember that?
And Ella and Louis, the most unlikely pair I can think of…
Good set!

I do remember Sha Na Na’s syndicated show. I viewed the Blue Cheer video of Summertime Blues, but picked The Who to represent the era. My favorite was probably Brian Setzer & Stray Cats with a true throwback arrangement. I think Setzer was playing the exact same model guitar as Eddie Cochran.

What a sweet pup! If i could have one, i would.
It’s been years since i’ve seen ShaNaNa, i really enjoyed them. Thanks for the Ella and Louis, they are two of my favorites.

Ella and Louis are hard to beat. We went twelve years without a pup in the house, then two years ago we brought a cocker spaniel pup home and she is now the “House Princess”. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Lucy looks like she’s holding pom-poms. Is she a cheerleader? 🙂
I can’t believe it’s nearing the end of May so soon. I’m sure the schools in our county have already dismissed for the summer, which blows my mind. How did this happen? Wasn’t it just January 1st yesterday? Sure feels like it.
Ella and Louise are a purrfect pair, aren’t they? I think I’ve heard ‘Summertime’ before by this incredible legendary duet but this morning it was especially nice to hear again – loved it! Our temperatures seem to indicate the passing of spring going straight to summer with it being in the upper 80s to low 90s. Whew, that’s too warm for me and I’m sure before it’s all over I’ll be complaining about the heat. I’ll try to keep things to a minimal and enjoy the moment as best as I can knowing that things will cool off again all too quickly.
Oh golly, do I ever remember us singing from the top of our little lungs Alice Cooper’s ‘School’s Out’ as we ran all the way home. That was in the days before our district decided to do a mashup with another nearby school. It was great being able to walk to and from school. My parents’ home was just across the creek from my elementary school in those days which was an easy 5-min trot.
Thanks for spinning some great songs on your turntable for the 4M dance party today. Have a boogietastic week, my friend!

Those aren’t pom poms, those are pawm pawms…cocker spaniel pawm pawms.
Yes time is passing at an alarming rate. The third grand daughter will be a high school senior this fall. I thought Ella & Louis was a perfect start. I viewed the original Broadway number but it was a little too formal for my taste.
I remember looking forward to the end of the school year. I don’t think any of us realized that the teachers were just as happy to see summer vacation coming as the students.

Great choices. I used to love Sha Na Na. Nowadays they’re remembered only as a line in an Adam Sandler song.

I always thought Sha Na Na was a most entertaining throw-back, do-wop tribute group. I don’t think I’ll ever forget the do-wop bass voice of “Bowser”.

I always liked “Summertime” as well. While this cocker spaniel doesn’t belong to me, it is one of the cutest photos I have found.

Ah, you have one of my very favorite songs here Driller: Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out” — Such a teen anthem and I’m so glad I was that age when this song came out. It was fun.
What also was fun was hearing “Summertime Blues” by both Eddie Cochran and The Who back to back. And seeing The Who perform it live was a nice bonus.
I don’t remember Sha Na Na. I mean the name of the band sounds familiar but off the top of my head I wouldn’t be able to name one of their songs. I might go do a YouTube search to listen to a few of their otehr songs and see if I can remem
I really enjoyed hearing Louis and Ella together. The background strings are so nice too…
Weren’t the blue bonnets incredible this year? They seemed to last so long too. All that rain we had. But I’d be driving around and come upon a big bunch of them on the side of the road and it was so surprising: I’d point and say, “Holy Moly, there’s still blue bonnets out!”
Have a good holiday weekend Driller.

The bluebonnets were a real treat, but the drive through the Hill Country was a special adventure. We really want to do it again.

You continue to amaze with the depth and breadth of your musical taste. Summertime Blues was what the music teacher in 7th and 8th grades played at the end when we behaved!! School’s Out is another classic. Keep them coming!!
