Day Trip – Siloam Springs, AR

Recently my wife and I made a day trip to near-by Siloam Springs, Arkansas which is only a thirty minute drive from our house. Siloam Springs main claim to fame is home to John Brown University, a small liberal arts college. Siloam also has a beautiful park in the center of town and many of the surrounding buildings are undergoing renovation and upscale shops and restaurants are becoming more common. We had lunch at an eatery called 28 Springs, which is located in an Art Deco structure that was formerly car dealership. The food was outstanding and reasonably priced. My wife enjoyed a salad while in savored a Cranberry Quesadilla sandwich. After lunch we shopped a couple of stores, strolled across the street to the park and captured a few images. We left our house about 10:30 a.m. and were back home by 2:30 p.m. I am sure we will return to explore a little more of our neighboring town in the Ozarks.

Monday’s Music Moves Me

The dog days of summer signal the ending of hot weather and a reminder that fall is just around the corner, so the theme for the 4M gang this week is end of summer songs. I thought I would start with a newer arrangement of a classic. Originally released by Johnny Mercer with Jo Stafford, “Autumn Leaves” has been covered by a multitude of super stars and now has a new arrangement by Eric Clapton. Enjoy.

One super group that came out of my young adulthood was Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. When the group split Neil Young released a couple of great albums. One song that fits our theme is Harvest Moon.

Coming straight out of the late sixties was a mixed quartet super-group. The Mamas & Papas biggest hit was California Dreamin’.

One final blast from the past. Nearly every child of the sixties owned the Simon and Grafunkle album Sounds of Silence. One lovely tune to come out of that effort is “The Leaves are Green”. Have a blessed week.

    California Dreamin’ is one of my favorite songs. Not the same California as it was back then though.

    Siloam Springs is a town that we just go through on our way to somewhere else. Looks like I should check it out sometime.

    Those songs are wonderful. They pull at the heartstrings of almost every Boomer.

    Your puppy is just too cute, and she has a look on her face like she knows it! ~hehehe~ She must be wonderful to cuddle up with and I bet she likes it too! ~hehehe~ Those pictures of your trip are wonnnnnnnnnderful. I need to go their too and see for myself. It’s so lovely! Thank you so much for sharing those lovely pictures. Your choice of tunes are superb. My favorite was the Mamas and the Papas! What great tunes… what great memories!!! Such wonderful tunes Simon and Garfunkel was my bell bottom, beads, long ironed hair with a beaded head-band… oh yes, I remember it well!!! Wow My friend you surely took me down memory lane!!! Such wonderful choices! Thank you my friend for playing along with us and giving us your taste in music, which is fabulous!       Lucy definitely knows that she is special. She will curl lay next to you on the couch or in a chair but she is not a cuddle pup. If you pick her up to cuddle, she will go somewhere else and lay down.
      The more I got into the theme this week the more memories came back of good times during difficult time and great music amidst the turmoil of those days. Have a blessed week.

    I came by yesterday, listened to your songs, and forgot to comment. I just left my browser open all nigh. That’s what happens when I get pulled away unexpectedly. Anyway I’m back before the crack of dawn with the hopes of finishing my visit up THIS time. 🙂

    Your trip to Siloam Springs sounded nice. The photos of the park are beautifully peaceful with the white gazebo, water spilling over the small dam, and lush green grass. It looks like a good place to picnic by the water or throw ball on the lawn. 🙂

    Your song choices are excellent. My favorite is the introduction of “Leaves Are Green”. I can’t believe that’s new to my ears. I really like it. It has a soothing melody coupled with the harmonizing voices of Simon & Garfunkel. Thanks for sharing with me and for joining the 4M crew on the dance floor. Have a boogietastic week, my friend.     As you can see, I am running late as well. Many songs from 1967 or 68 are new to my ears. I was in Vietnam then and most of the music we heard was at least two years old. I was always a sucker for harmony so groups like Mamas & Papas, Beach Boys, and Temptations would have always been on my playlist if we had playlists back then. Have a blessed week.

    …Eric Clapton, Neil Young, The Mamas & Papas and Simon and Grafunkle will always have a home on my playlist. But let me say that their breakup cooled my interest in Paul Simon. Perhaps I’m wrong, but I thought that Simon was a bit too big for his britches. Take care and keep the oldies playing.
