Taking a Break

The same day and in the same location as the model train show that I recently posted, there was a horse show. For some reason I felt like I needed to get on with my day and I did not give in to the urge to stop and photo the competition going on inside the arena. This pony was tied to his trailer, taking a break from the activities in the show ring. Next time I will stop and smell the roses…or something like that.

Spring Sports!

Basketball season is over and that can only mean one thing, time for spring sports. We no longer have any grandchildren playing sports at the high school level, but that doesn’t mean that I have stopped enjoying photographing high school sports. I do have a friend whose daughter is playing softball for one of the area high schools, so I drove out to one of their recent games to capture a few images.

Soccer and track are just getting started so there will be more to come, there just won’t be the personal attachment to the players that I used to have. Have a blessed week.

Monday’s Music Moves Me

The honorary co-hostess/conductor/dj for this month is Marie at XmasDollie. This week the theme is old rock and roll songs. No problem. I am as old as rock and roll itself, so let’s see if I can find some tunes that have been gathering dust for far too long. Time to drag them out of the closet and put them back on the turntable.

While Elvis may be recognized as the King of Rock ‘n Roll, it was artists like Little Richard that had been playing this music for several years in dives, juke joints and honky tonks who introduced rock ‘n roll to the world. They were the influences that Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis drew inspiration from and covered their songs.

Perhaps the ultimate showman/guitar player of the 50’s was Chuck Berry. Chuck had an influnce on artists like Keith Richards and the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and the Beatles. 60’s artist Johnny Rivers covered several of Chuck Berry’s songs and made them hits of his own.

One artists whose music seems to have fallen through the cracks of oldies radio is Del Shannon.

A classic duo that blended country with rock ‘n roll was the Everly Brothers. While most of us may think of Linda Ronstadt when we hear this song, but it was written by Phil Everly and recorded by the Everly Brothers in 1960. It asks the age old question, “When Will I Be Loved”.

Let’s face it, I could do this all day long. I think I will bring this playlist to a close, but I will definitely return to early rock ‘n roll in the near future. This was really fun.

    There is no smell quite like that of a well kept horse barn or arena. Your action shots of human athletes are amazing, i would very much enjoy photos of horses competing if you ever have time.

    Growing up, i heard this music, but not on the radio, on Grandpa’s record player. It is still enjoyed.

    That pony is beautiful. It looks so serene, just waiting there like that.

    Your softball action photos are wonderful! Even though they are still photos, they capture so much action. The one with the young woman looking up at the umpire is rife with anticipation. It’s a moment in time — what happened next, it makes one wonder?

    I enjoyed this theme, too. I don’t listen to oldies stations but I enjoy the music when I hear it. I didn’t know “When Will I Be Loved” was a cover. My favorite was “Runaway “.

    I don’t listen to the oldies stations, but I do like the music of my early youth when I hear it. I never knew “When Will I Be Loved” was a cover, and, to be truthful, I liked Linda Ronstadt singing it a lot better than the Everly Brothers original. Surprised me, as I like the Everly Brothers. My favorite was “Runaway”, a favorite of mine when it first came out.

      I don’t listen much to oldies stations either, but I do have Spotify playlists that are peppered with blasts from the past. I always loved the harmony of the Everly Brothers, but there is no denying the awesome talent of Rondstadt, perhaps the best female vocalist of the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s.

    Part of being a good creative person is knowing when you just need a break, like not wanting to go photograph the horses. The one shot is perfect. If you don’t feel it, that will show in your work and everyone needs a break sometimes. Enjoy photographing those sports. I bet some of the kids and/or their families would love some of your awesome photos. What a great way to share your love of photography.

      Yes, I do give some the parents copies of the image files and they can post them, print them and share them with their friends and family. For me, it’s about making memories for someone else to enjoy.

    The newspaper needs to hire you to cover sports. You hare good at it.

    I loved your rock and roll review. At the Grammy’s they had a number in the spirit of Little Richard.

      I don’t know if I could handle the deadlines and pressure of delivering quality images to the paper on a regular basis. I prefer to share the moments with the parents, but thank you for the kind words.

    What a sweet little pony! When I was a young girl there was a home we passed often where a Shetland pony lived. I always thought that was so cool. These days I can’t remember who lived in that house but I do remember one time going to a birthday party there. I don’t know why I didn’t retain those details. I can’t even remember the child’s name but I believe it was a little girl. I loved your flashback to the late 50s and early 60s with your music picks. What a nostalgic time!     One thing I want to say is always that before buying more laptop or computer memory, check out the machine in which it would be installed. In the event the machine will be running Windows XP, for instance, the particular memory ceiling is 3.25GB. The installation of above this would easily constitute any waste. Make sure one’s motherboard can handle the actual upgrade volume, as well. Good blog post.
