My wife and I have been growing a small garden this year and have truly enjoyed the taste of tomatoes fresh from the vine. There is nothing better than a BLT sandwich when the lettuce and tomatoes come fresh from the garden. I also built a raised planter on one side of the house for the splash of color from zenias and a few herbs. The other day my wife spotted several caterpillars on the parsley.

They are very colorful little souls, so I did a little research to determine what kind of moth/butterfly that we might expect to see in a few weeks. To my surprise we have had these butterflies on our butterfly bushes in the past. These beautiful creatures will soon become black swallowtail butterflies.

The privilege of witnessing this life cycle reminds me even the smallest details of creation, regardless of how short lived, are important to the Creator. Have a blessed week.
Monday’s Music Moves Me
This week the theme at 4M is freedom of choice, so I believe I will continue my love affair with the soundtrack from the movie Twisters. Enjoy.
This was a nice set. I am a fan of Jelly Roll (from his crossover music) and I enjoyed his song, although my favorites were Hell or High Water and Touchdown. But best of all were your black swallowtail larvae pictures. I rarely see these here in New York (the larvae, that is) and they’ve never been on my parsley. I wonder how many people hit the “kill” switch without actually researching what they see on a plant, and I’m happy you did. We are stewards of the Earth, not its owners. Alana ramblinwitham

There is always more herbs than we can use so I don’t mind sharing with the caterpillars, knowing what I have to look forward to seeing on my butterfly bushes. Coloration on most caterpillars is their only defense from predators. Yes indeed, we are caretakers of the planet not the creator of everything we see.

Thank you for sharing the beauty of the caterpillars and the butterflies they become (and I hope they leave you some of the parsley).

We rarely use everything we grow. The caterpillars take the parsley and turn into awesome butterflies.

We have never seen black butterflies, how interesting! They are so nice and bright now as caterpillars how odd they become so dark when they change.

The photo doesn’t do the butterfly justice. There is an iridescence to their wings that is difficult to capture but is a sight to behold.

The caterpillars are the star of the show and we often miss seeing this phase of a butterfly. I wouldn’t mind growing a whole garden of butterfly attracting plants. Milkweed is the favorite food and egg laying location for Monarchs. I may have to get me some next year.

During our homeschool years, one of the coolest thing we did was a butterfly garden which we got as a kit from one of our resources. Thanks for sharing your song picks today. Have a boogietastic week, my friend!

I think the caterpillar phase is most interesting. Some of the colors and designs are spectacular.

That’s pretty cool that you are now running a nursery for butterflies.. We are in Red River NM this week. We went on a hike the other day and a fellow hiker showed us a caterpillar of some sort munching on one of the plants alongside the trail. I was kind of wondering what it might turn out to be.

It has been pretty cool and just the other day I actually saw a black swallowtail butterfly in the back yard. No proof that it came from our caterpillars, but I am going to claim it all the same.
