Monday’s Music Moves Me

Our prompt for this week at 4M is…The early Roman began the calendar year with March because it brought the first day of spring and new beginnings. The approaching changing seasons with the evidence of life’s return is visible in our area and perhaps where you live, too. Pick songs that reflect the mood of sunny spring weather.

The challenge here is that March in Northwest Arkansas can bring 8″ of snow, thunderstorms and 8″ of rain, or sunny skies and “Chamber of Commerce Weather”. I am inclined to pick thunderstorms so here a a couple of songs that come to mind.

Stormy weather has long been the inspiration for love lost or gone wrong. A song, with the title, Stormy Weather, was first sung by Ethel Watters in the Cotton Club, New York City 1933. Here is Etta James with a classic recording.

Most of us have experienced a little Stormy Weather in romance, but some have seen the relationship go wrong and they’ve heard it when TheThunder Rolls.

In 1940 there was a movie called Stormy Weather. There is a showstopping dance number called Jumpin Jive! Let’s wrap this up with a video that will put a smile on your face and long for the days of pure entertainment.

Great song choices this week. I love the Garth Brooks song. and the Nicolas Brothers were one of the best dance teams ever. (Cab Calloway was the icing on this spring cake.) Speaking of spring: Your bird on the right side of the feeder intrigues me. From the beak I’d think Red Crossbill, but the wings are wrong (and I don’t think they are feeder birds anyway; their major food source is extracting pine seeds from pinecones). II’m sure an experienced birder will tell me these are two house finches-oh well.) That’s what makes birding, and photography, fun. Alana RamblinwithAM

  3. We don’t have many grackles but we have an army of starlings and they just swarm the feeders, run all the other birds off, then devour the contents. The dance number was an awesome find for me.

love the music you chose and Stormy Weather is one of my favs. I love Judy Garland’s rendition of that song. Love the Nicholas Brothers who defy gravity and injury with those splits! I can hear many men cry out in pain when they do those splits. Funny, when I was a kid, ii tried to be in the split position and rise up from there. I never could. I wish they were more widely known.
