Aww Monday

Any time Lucy hears the garage door opening she comes to attention and anxiously awaits the arrival of the driver. Maybe they are bringing snacks!

Monday’s Music Moves Me

Summer has officially begun and the temperatures are rising. I mistakenly did this theme a several weeks ago so I will have to find some new tunes for this post. For many people summer means time spent on the water and that can include creeks, rivers, lakes, seas and oceans. As long as you have a enough space to turn the boat, you can water ski in the river, which is where I put on my first pair of skis. The Verdigris River, just east of Tulsa, OK is now a navigation channel but there are still places on it that one can water ski. The first song today is from Alan Jackson and it’s all about water skis and the river. And yes, I have water skied while wearing a cowboy hat…several years before this song and video were produced.

I suppose a lot of people have stories about a “summer love” but I don’t happen to be one of them so I will just have to rely on Deana Carter’s, “Strawberry Wine”. It’s a great song from the 90’s country charts, which I happen to believe was one of the golden eras of country music.

Traveling in the “Way-back Machine”, we still have summer love and wine as the components of this song. Nancy Sinatra is most famous for “These Boots Were Made for Walkin’, but she teamed up with Lee Hazelwood for a pure country duet.

I found another summer love song from one of the founders of Eagles, Don Henley.

Of course no music tribute to summer would be complete without the original musical boys of summer, The Beach Boys.  We all know that summer is all about Good Vibrations.

  2. I’m familiar with the last two songs so I jumped right to the front of the line and listened to the ones I didn’t know. Alan Jackson looked like he had so much fun making the video (it certainly was nice and cooling!) and this non-country music listener really enjoyed how upbeat it was. Strawberry Wine was OK but the Nancy Sinatra duo blew me away. The lyrics, both voices complemented each other and and instrumentation all made this song come together. (Hope this doesn’t make you roll your eyes, but I could see this as a James Bond movie theme – the instrumentation part, anyway.) Nice set – have a great week.

  3. Driller,

    Lucy is awwesomely cute!

In the early 80s, I experienced water skiing for the first time. My BIL & his wife had a ski boat and occasionally invited us to join them on the water. I was not too good at it but did it anyhow. I can’t say I had a lot of fun doing it but it was nice to have that experience. Can you imagine how heavy Alan’s jeans were by the time that video was shot? And, how on earth did he keep his cowboy hat on? I can’t even keep my baseball cap on when it gets a bit too windy. Thanks for the induction of the duet featuring Nancy Sinatra. The only song I am familiar with that she did is the one you mentioned. She has a lovely voice. I really enjoyed listening to ‘Summer Wine’. Thanks for sharing it with me. Oh, yes I had a summer love or that’s what I thought it was at the moment but it was more one-sided. Do you care to guess who’s side? Yep, that boy was fooling with my heart. What a cheap trick! The good mews is I got over him fast. I figured that boy was trouble and was glad I learned it sooner than later. ‘The Boys of Summer’ is a great song choice and of course, you can’t help but think of ‘Good Vibrations’ when you think of summer. Thanks for sharing the dance floor with the 4M gang, my furriend.

    1. Yes, the “House Princess” is cute and she knows it!
Wearing a cowboy hat while skiing is possible because I’ve done it. I suppose if your jeans are tight enough there will be less water involved…I wouldn’t know from experience. I guess playing baseball was my summer love and I broke up with it my junior year in high school.

    1. There were a lot of great groups in the sixties. In fact the sixties might have been the decade of groups, everything from Frankie & the Four Seasons, to the Temptations, to the Mamas & Papas.
