We have two raised bed gardens in our back yard and each one is 4’x8′. We grow, three varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, and okra. The okra is just now beginning to produce and we had some with dinner recently. The Roma tomatoes and cucumbers produced bumper crops so my wife made Bread & Butter pickles and I made a spicy smoked salsa. I love the pickles on burgers and the salsa is a great compliment to any Tex-Mex dish. I smoked the onions, tomatoes and jalapenos on my pellet grill prior to blending them with spices, cilantro and lime juice. It really makes for a great flavor combo. I think everything tastes better when you grow it at home and make the product in your kitchen.

That salsa looks great! Mom loves the flavor of smoked things so she would really love that. Cucumbers is one veggie she can’t stand so the pickles would not be for her but they sure do look nice.

This post reminds me of my childhood. Mom tended the garden and when it was time to can I’d help her. Jars and jars of delicious veggies that we ate all year long. A fond memory.

My dad always had a garden as did my grandmother and my wife’s parents had a huge vegetable garden. It is very satisfying to harvest the fruits of your labor and enjoy them in your meals.

Mmm, that sure does look good! I’d love to raise a small garden like y’alls. Home grown and home-made are truly is the cream of the crop. You just can’t beat that kind of goodness straight from your kitchen.

My spouse (sadly) had to give up gardening last year. He never smoked veggies for salsa but did make it and can it up to a handful of years ago. Yours sounds so delicious. Re the songs, Kamikaze’s intro immediately hooked me. So I looked it up and it’s part of a genre (I found out for myself-I’m sure you already know this) called Texas Red Dirt Country. Definitely (to me) rock influences in the song. It was my favorite of the three. I was enjoying Empty Words (to me it had a Jelly Roll vibe) but it ended too soon. Have a good week. Our garden is small and to be honest, my wife does most of the work. I just pick some of the veggies and make some salsa.
Red Dirt country is a reference to the soil found in western Oklahoma and Texas and is where the sound originated. Some say it first became popular on the campus of Oklahoma State University from the band Red Dirt Rangers. The music is a fusion of rock ‘n roll and old school country of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s when country music was generally described as three chords and the truth. Artists like Hank Williams Sr, Patsy Cline, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys all come to mind. Blend that with Garth Brooks, Lynyrd Skynrd and Alabama and you have Red Dirt.
